Colorism from Sammy Sosa, Precious, and those Damn Hip Hop Videos

Beautiful Skin
That picture of Sammy Sosa with his new bleached skin makes my stomach turn. He was so much cuter with the dark skin and that nice smile, not so much anymore. This BROTHER bleached his skin, put colored contacts in his eyes, and slicked back his hair for what? For who? Sammy clearly is injecting himself with something as well(some say it’s not the first time). No moisturizer is gonna get your ears and neck that bright.
There are so many complexities, layers associated with being black. Black comes in many different shades.You can come from a different culture, speak a different language, call yourself; Dominican, Mexican, Haitian, Puerto Rican, Nuyorican, Brazilian, Creole, but behind those titles is the obvious, you got some black in you.

Those are fighting words for many of those groups, but that’s their issue and I’m not going to debate it. But why is it that being associated with black has to be a bad thing? Okay I don’t have time to answer that, but I will say this…
Our story is one of tragedy, triumph, sorrow, and joy. Despite our layers we are beautiful. Still in 2009 we’re still talking about light skinned v dark skin. Many are complaining about the new movie Precious and it’s alleged colorism (the troubled characters are dark and the saviors are all fair skinned) see what The Root had to say about Precious click riiiight here.

Let not forget about relaxed hair v natural hair debate which Chris Rock addressed in his documentary Good Hair. And if we’re gonna talk about colorism how can we leave out the video vixens once upon a time the video vixen was a very light black chick, now she’s not even black, but she is light with long hair.
Colorism is embedded so deeply in many of us. I attempt to reject it. Most of the guys I’m really attracted to are really dark, but who am I kidding fine is fine no matter what color. Dominican, Latina, Haitian, light/dark we’re all HUMAN. Isn’t that the simple thing to say though? Can’t we all get along? How bout can’t we all REPRESENT! (rolling eyes).
What do you think about Sammy’s bleached skin? The cast of Precious? How do you feel about the omission of black women in hip hop videos? Did you ever doubt the skin you were in?
